Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle After Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the mission, such as spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

About the Mission

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from different industries.

The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
