The Issue
The cold season is often brutal for tropical houseplants. Home heating systems turn living rooms into arid zones, causing previously vibrant calatheas with dry, brittle leaf margins. Spraying can increase moisture levels, but the results are short-lived.
The Hack
An electric humidifier provides a continuous mist to increase humidity around your plants. You simply fill the tank with water and let it run for a couple of hours a day, so humidity levels resemble the tropics rather than a dry indoor environment.
How It Works
Unlike pebble trays or misting, humidifiers provide consistent, quantifiable results. Foliage lose less water through their foliage, meaning less stress and more energy for growth. In theory, it ought to eliminate the notorious dry leaf margin issue completely.
The Test
I tried a tabletop unit beside my calatheas. Following a fortnight, the change was noticeable: no new brown tips, shinier foliage and new shoots. Drawbacks? Refilling the tank, cleaning to prevent mold, the quiet noise, and power consumption. Budget options can break quickly, and bigger units might be pricey.
The Verdict
If you’re serious about humid-loving species, a moisture generator is a worthwhile investment. It isn’t essential for resistant varieties such as snake plants or ZZ plants, but for sensitive types such as calatheas, it may represent the difference between barely surviving and thriving.
